Cloone 0-11 Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher 0-5
A far more clinical Cloone booked their place in the GWP Intermediate Championship Final when they turned in a powerful display to dispatch Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher with some ease last Sunday evening in Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada. The north Leitrim men carried the tag of favourites into the game after a series of impressive displays but it was an unheralded Cloone who dominated this game and deservedly booked their place in the final.
In very difficult conditions and the wind behind them, Cloone didn’t seem to have done enough when leading by four points at the break but they turned in a great defensive display, limiting Glenfarne/Kilty to just two seconds half points.
Yet they will also thank their lucky stars that keeper Kieran Casey made a wonderful save 13 minutes from time from Padraig Sweeney’s spot-kick while Seamus McCaffrey, surely a contender for man of the match with a tireless display, brought off an equally impressive save earlier in the half from Fergal Clancy.
Had either of those shots hit the back of the net, one felt that Glenfarne/Kilty would have really taken off but with Cloone’s resistance stopping them in their tracks, the north Leitrim men never looked like amassing the scores they so desperately needed.
That was down to the fact that Cloone felt comfortable in leaving Damien O’Donnell & Mark Creegan in attack, the speedy duo causing the Glenfarne back-line no end of problems and ensuring that the north Leitrim side were never really able to attack with the abandon they needed.
Donal Brennan and Mickey Lohan probably got through as much work in the second half in defence as they did in attack but it was all hands to the till and they made vital contributions to the cause.
With McCaffrey so impressive for Cloone, Aidan Mulvey led a strong defence that never really looked like coughing up clear cut scoring chances.
Glenfarne/Kilty will feel they never got enough from their attack but most of their players played too deep, meaning that any Glenfarne attacker who got the ball was often severely isolated and without real support.
The north Leitrim men battled away but they lacked the little bit of know-how that Cloone demonstrated so ably through-out the semi-final, with Damien O’Donnell an incisive edge that Glenfarne just didn’t have.
Cloone now meet Aughawillan in a final that will have special significance for former Aughawillan great and current Cloone manager Gerry Flanagan as he attempts to get one over on his club-mates, adding greatly to the whole occasion.
Donal Brennan opened the scoring, set up by a good second minute run from Mark Beirne.
Michael Magurie’s 40-yard free attempt at a reply went wide but a Padraig Sweeney free had the sides level once more after five minutes.
Damien O’Donnell swung over a great effort from the left wing to edge Cloone back in front but again Glenfarne hit back when Sweeney converted his second free of the day.
Cloone, however, were beginning to look dominant but a wide apiece from Brennan and O’Donnell didn’t help, Brennan also getting booked for dissent as Fergal Clancy converted the free.
That was the high point for Glenfarne/Kilty as Cloone started to get on top with the hard running of O’Donnell, McCaffrey and Brennan causing the north Leitrim men real problems.
O’Donnell scored a great effort from the right corner after a Brennan pass while Seamus McCaffrey saw a shot deflected out for a fifty on 18 minutes, a placed ball that was duly thumped over the bar by Mark Beirne.
Beirne then hit a free wide while Mark Creegan shot across the face of the Glenfarne goal after a good move. O’Donnell too saw a shot hit the post but a 23rd minute free from the County panellist got Cloone moving again on the score-board.
Despite another fifty going wide, Cloone started to open a gap with Brennan gathering a quick free to score under pressure while Seamus McCaffrey benefitted from a breaking ball to point with two minutes left in the half.
Cloone could have extended their 0-7 to 0-3 halftime lead but O’Donnell had one shot go wide and another blocked before the break. Unfortunately for him, he opened the second half with a free dropping short.
Glenfarne/Kilty were intent on using the wind and Fergal Clancy lofted a 40-yard free over the Cloone bar on four minutes and Padraig Sweeney followed shortly after with a free after on foul on Michael Maguire as he burst through the centre.
Glenfarne were on a roll but it was stopped in dramatic fashion when a long range free broke loose and Fergal Clancy seemed destined to goal only for Seamus McCaffrey to intercept the ball on the line.
The north Leitrim men were beginning to miss chances with Maguire seeing one free go wide and another blocked while J.J. McDermott had a shot go across goal.
Crucially, Cloone lifted the siege when Donal Brennan’s long ball almost put Damien O’Donnell through on goal. He passed back to Brian Mulvey who set up veteran Mickey Lohan for an excellent point on 12 minutes.
The turning point came five minutes later when Fergal Clancy’s sideline ball was punched across the face of the goal.
Sub Dermot O’Rourke gathered and went to go by his man but was taken down in a collision, referee Thomas Forde awarded the spot-kick.
With the pressure on, Fergal Clancy struck the ball well but Kieran Casey in the Cloone goal was equal to the task, pushing the ball out for a fifty in a vital save as the confidence started to visibly drain from the north Leitrim men.
Michael Maguire put the fifty wide and Cloone lifted the siege when O’Donnell converted a soft enough free on 22 minutes. He repeated the dose four minutes later to put his team five points clear and, in a game where chances were few and far between, it was an enormous gap.
With less than a minute left on the clock, Cloone sealed the win when sub Niall Brennan kept a wild O’Donnell shot in play and worked the ball back to Mark Creegan for a slick point and a place in the Intermediate Final.
