2010 Minor 9-a-side league champions

The Victorious Glenfarne Minor team with management of Francis McLoughlin and Bernard Murray

Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher captured the Minor 9-a-side league title with a hard fought seven point win over Aughnasheelin in Ballinagleara on Thursday evening last. Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher’s greater ability to turn their chances into scores was the difference between the sides in the end.

It took five minutes for the game’s first score to be registered as both sides hit a number of early wides. Stephen McManus opened the scoring in empathic style when he finished to the Aughnasheelin net after a pass from Michéal Ferguson. Aughnasheelin went close to replying immediately but Keith Sammon’s shot was saved by Kevin Leonard in the Glenfarne/Kilty goal. Shane Ferguson followed up with a point immediately to stretch the Glenfarne/Kilty lead to four points as they dominated the early exchanges. Keith Boyle opened the Aughnasheelin account a minute later when he pointed a free from an acute angle. The lead was down to two points on eight minutes when Niall Mulvanerty pointed from play. Ronan McGovern pointed from play a minute later to restore Glenfarne/Kilty’s three point lead. Keith Boyle finish a long run from his own half with a point to leave two between the teams as the first half reached the midway stage. This was to be Aughnasheelin’s last score of the half as Glenfarne/Kilty assumed control of the game and built what turned out to be a match winning lead. First Rory McLoughlin pointed a free after he was fouled on the edge of the large square. This was followed up by a point from play by Michéal Ferguson a minute later. Two more points from the impressive John McLoughlin, the first from a free and the second from play stretched the lead to six points as the half time whistle sounded.

The second half began brightly for Aughnasheelin as David Gallagher fisted the ball over the bar in the opening seconds. Substitute Robbie Broughton restored the north Leitrim team’s lead two minutes later when he kicked a point from play. Joe Earley kicked a long range point from play with five minutes of the half gone to reduce the lead to five. Glenfarne/Kilty sealed victory over the next ten minutes as the built an unassailable eleven point lead. First Michéal Ferguson pointed from a free and two points from play from Rory McLoughlin and Ferguson again put them eight clear halfway through the half. Glenfarne/Kilty then found the net for the second time when Shane Ferguson finished off a well worked move. David Gallagher pointed from play for Aughnasheelin on fourteen minutes when he put a goal opportunity over the bar. Michéal Ferguson pointed from play to restore the Glenfarne/Kilty lead. David Gallagher again pointed from play as Aughnasheelin attempted a comeback. Over the next three minutes Aughnasheelin pressed for a goal. It finally came with time almost up. A Keith Boyle shot came back off the cross bar and fell to Keith Sammon who despatched to the net. That was to be the final action of the match as referee Thomas Forde sounded the full time whistle to spark celebrations among the Glenfarne/Kilty players and supporters.

For Glenfarne/Kilty this win will go some way towards making up for the Minor and Under-21 finals which they lost last year. The victory was built on a solid team performance where Shane Ferguson in defence, and John McLoughlin and Michéal Ferguson in midfield were most impressive. Aughnasheein can take heart from the fact that they have a number of talented young footballers who never gave up until the final whistle. Joe Earley in defence, the impressive Keith Boyle in midfield and David Gallagher upfront were their top performers.

Aughnasheelin: David McWeeney, Patrick Cull, Joe Earley (0-1), Conal McManus, Keith Boyle (0-2), Kevin Gallagher, Niall Mulvanerty(0-1), Keith Sammon (1-0), David Gallagher (0-3). Subs: Kevin McWeeney, Brian Boyle, Gavin Boyle, Ronan White, Brendan McCaffrey.
