Seniors win local derby against Ballinagleara

Ballinagleara 0-9
Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher 1-12

Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher ran out comfortable six point winners over Ballinagleara in this Division 2 league encounter played in perfect conditions in Ballinagleara on Sunday afternoon. Ballinagleara can thank goalkeeper Conor O’Brien for keeping the margin down to six points as he made a number of impressive saves in one on one situations. Both clubs would consider this game a local derby but in truth it lacked the intensity of previous clashes between the sides. Glenfarne/Kilty move into second place in the table ahead of Aughnasheelin on scoring difference and always looked in control of the match bar a brief period in the second half.

Fergal Clancy opened the scoring for Glenfarne/Kilty after three minutes with a point from a free after a foul on Diarmuid Clancy. Two minutes later Conor O’Brien made the first of a series of fine saves when he stopped a Niall Clancy shot after he was put through one on one with the keeper. Seamus McMorrow levelled the match on seven minutes with a point from a free after a foul on full forward Colm Maguire. Glenfarne/Kilty opened a three point lead over the next eight minutes as Dermot O’Rourke and Enda Gallagher dominated the midfield exchanges. Two pointed frees from Fergal Clancy and an excellent point from an awkward angle from J.J. McDermott left three between the teams midway through the half. Ballingleara were level within five minutes. First veteran forward Colm Maguire showed he has lost none of his free taking accuracy when he pointed a wonderful long range free. Then Seamus McMorrow pointed from a free after a foul on Maguire. A minute later Maguire himself scored from a free to leave nothing between the teams with ten minutes of the half left. J.J. McDermott pointed from play to put Glenfarne/Kilty ahead by one on twenty two minutes. The major score of the game came two minutes later. Barry McDermott raced soccer style through the heart of the Ballinagleara defence and blasted to the net. This was followed up a minute later by a well worked point from play by Diarmuid Clancy. Seamus McMorrow had the final say of the half when he pointed from a free for Gleara to leave four between the teams at half time.

Ballinagleara drew first blood after half-time as Seamus McMorrow pointed from a free to leave a goal between the teams. Glenfarne/Kilty responded with two points from play from Diarmuid and Fergal Clancy. Conor O’Brien kept Ballinagleara in the game when he dived bravely at the feet of Barry McDermott to prevent the Glenfarne man from scoring. The impressive J.J. McDermott increased the Glenfarne/Kilty lead to six on ten minutes when he pointed from play. The post came to Ballinagleara’s rescue a minute later when Barry McDermott again found himself with only the keeper to beat but his well struck effort hit the upright. A point from play midway through the half from J.J. McDermott left Glenfarne/Kilty ahead by seven as they completely dominated proceedings.

Seamus McMorrow attempted to kick-start a Ballinagleara comeback when he pointed a free after a foul on Colm Maguire. J.J. McDermott again pointed from play to restore the Glenfarne lead before a superb long range effort from Ray Gilmartin sparked Ballinagleara to life. Colm Maguire pointed from play as Ballinagleara began to get a foothold in the game. However they were unable to build on this and Glenfarne/Kilty finished the game the stronger. Conor O’Brien again saved his side when he denied James Murray with a fine save. J.J. McDermott then rounded off an impressive performance with his final point of the afternoon with a minute left. There was still time for O’Brien to make another save as he again denied James Murray after the substitute was put clear on goal. Ballinagleara had one final chance but Seamus McMorrow’s thirteen metre free was stopped on the line by a Glenfarne/Kilty defender and that action brought the match to a close.

The win leaves Glenfarne/Kilty in a strong position going into the last three rounds of league games. Win their last three games and the North Leitrim men will be promoted to Division 1. This task is easier said than done as they face last year’s Intermediate Champions Cloone plus finalists of two years ago Drumkeerin and Aughnasheelin in their last three games. On the day Stephen Sweeny in defence, Dermot O’Rourke in midfield and J.J. McDermott, Fergal and Niall Clancy in attack were their best performers.

For Ballinagleara they will need to pick up a number of victories in their last three games if they are to avoid a return to Division 3. On the day they had good performances from Brendan McGourty in defence, Hugh Gilmartin in midfield while Colm Maguire in attack worked hard.

Intermediate team beaten by Aughavas in Round 2 of leauge

March 15th, 2010 admin No comments

Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher 0-08
Aughavas 0-10

Aughavas registered their first league win of 2010 when they overcame Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher at a blustery Belcoo last Saturday evening. The Glenfarne/Kilty men had been hoping to build on an impressive first round victory over Gortlettragh but were undone by their failure to build a large enough lead when aided by a strong first half breeze. Aughavas owe their victory in no small part to the outstanding Colm Maguire at full forward. In a scrappy encounter the Aughavas full forward shone throughout and was the fulcrum for the majority of Aughavas’s attacking play.

The game opened brightly with the first score coming after just a minute. Colm Maguire opened the Aughavas account with a pointed free after he himself was fouled. Fergal Clancy registered Glenfarne/Kilty’s first score a minute later with a point from a free after a foul on Niall Clancy. They were ahead a minute later as Clancy landed another free following a foul on James Murray. Aughavas levelled the game three minutes later when Conor Bohan pointed from a free after Colm Maguire was fouled. A point from play from Colm McKiernan put Aughavas in front on 12 minutes. Glenfarne/Kilty hit back almost immediately when Fergal Clancy pointed a free after a foul on himself. Shane McLoughlin edged the north Leitrim men in front a minute later when he pointed following a pass from J.J McDermott after great work from the centre forward to create the opportunity. The next ten minutes of the game proved very scrappy with both sides guilty of poor passing and a number of missed scoring attempts. It was during this period that Glenfarne/Kilty dropped a number of opportunities into the Aughavas’ goalkeeper’s hands. The scoring drought was finally broken a minute into injury time when Fergal Clancy stretched the Glenfarne/Kilty lead to two points with a score from a free. This proved to be the final action of the half and one has to feel the South Leitrim went in at the break the happier only trailing by two and the prospect of a strong breeze at their backs for the second half.

Aughavas introduced Niall Gallogly at the break and he made an immediate impact with a well taken point from play in the first minute of the second half to cut the cap to a minimum. Over the next five minutes Glenfarne/Kilty missed three scorable opportunities. This proved to be the turning point of the game as Aughavas then assumed control of the match with five unanswered points over the next ten minutes. It was the outstanding Maguire who lead the way with two excellent points from play and two more from frees to give Aughavas a three point lead with twelve minutes to go. Conor Bohan further increased that lead with a superbly taken point from distance with ten minutes left on the clock. Almost immediately Glenfarne/Kilty responded and a well taken point from play from Diarmuid Clancy sparked hopes of a comeback. Fergal Clancy cut the gap to two points a minute later with a pointed free. Two minutes later the gap was at a minimum as James Murray pointed from play. Further pressure was heaped on Aughavas with the dismissal of Adrian Charles for a second bookable offence with a minute left on the clock. However it was another of Aughavas’s veterans who had the final say in the scoring stakes. A quick ball out of the Aughavas defence found the recently introduced Fintan McBrien and in a case of the right man in the right place, the ex Leitrim star cooly slotted over the bar to give his side a two point lead. There was time for the north Leitrim men to launch one final attack. They were awarded a 20 metre free and with no choice but to go for goal Dermot O’Rourke’s well struck effort went just wide of the post. With that the final whistle went and Aughavas recorded their first points of the 2010 league.

Aside from the outstanding Colm Maguire, Aughavas were best served by Adrian Charles and Adrian Maguire in defence and Colin McKiernan in attack. For Glenfarne, Stephen Sweeney in defence and the hard working Fergal Clancy in midfield were best on the day.

Glenfarne/Kilty: Daragh Keaney, Stephen Sweeney, Sean McLoughlin, John Sheerin, Niall Clancy, Sean McManus, Dermot Harkin, Dermot O’Rourke, Fergal Clancy(0-5, 5f), Shane McLoughlin (0-1), J.J McDermott, Diarmuid Clancy (0-1), John McManus, Enda Gallagher, James Murray (0-1). Subs: Conor O’Rourke for Sean McLoughlin (15 Mins).

Aughavas: Patrick McGirl, Niall Maguire, Adrian Charles, Eoin Brennan, Derek Maguire, Adrian Maguire, Trevor Faralley, Kieran Moran, Eamonn Heslin, Peter McBrien, Colin McKiernan(0-1), Ray McBrien, Dan O’Brien, Colm Maguire (0-5, 3f), Conor Bohan (0-2, 1f). Subs: Niall Gallogly (0-1) for Peter McBrien (HT), Damien McKiernan for Eamonn Heslin (45 Mins), Fintan McBrien (0-1) for Conor Bohan (58 Mins)
